These Are A Few Of Our Favorite Things: Balance Board

A balance board is a versatile and fun piece of equipment for children to use indoors at home to improve balance, core strength, and body awareness. It is a board mounted on a rounded fulcrum and can range in shapes including square, circular, and rectangle. Standing or sitting on a balance board helps to strengthen your child’s core muscles because the core muscles must work in order to keep the body balanced. For the activities listed below, your child may need a handheld assist for stability.

Here are 5 ways to incorporate a balance board into everyday play:

1. Stand on the balance board while standing at a table surface. Engage in an activity of choice such as coloring or reading. Try to stay evenly balance so the board’s edges don’t touch the ground.

2. Squat with control on the balance board to pick up Legos or puzzle pieces.

3. Stand on the balance board with the right and the left foot on opposite ends of the board. Shift your weight side to side to pretend to surf while keeping your balance!

4. Sit on the board while you are doing a fun activity such as reading a book. Try to keep your balance and remember to sit up tall to improve posture!

5. Try standing on one leg on the board and count to ten! Make sure to stand on each leg.
