When and where?

9am-5pm on February 29 and March 1, 2020 at the Skills on the Hill offices in Washington, DC and Arlington, VA. Day one will take place in DC and Day 2 will take place in Arlington.

After receipt of registration, you will be sent an invoice email with instructions for submitting payment. Once payment is received, your spot is reserved. Cost of attendance for this event is $275 per person.

What can I expect from this event?

Alex offers practical ideas using suspension and non-suspension equipment to implement treatment interventions in the clinic, at school or at home. Hands on interventions to support breath, coordination, timing, balance, strength will be presented. Modifications, adaptions and grading of activities will be addressed to support best possible outcomes. Ideas for better engagement of the child will be addressed as well as discussion of ways to facilitate “play” for a stronger therapist-child relationship. This dynamic workshop will support participants through hands on learning as they experience the activities in their own bodies. Lastly, Alex will discuss how to create their own sensory equipment at a minimal cost.

By the end of the workshop, learners will be able to:

  • Understand the importance of vestibular, proprioceptive, and tactile integration as it relates to postural development, balance and physical development.
  • Participate in and generate ideas & activities that support sensory development.
  • Create effective sensory diets using DIY equipment, sensory tools, home sensory gyms and minimal equipment that can be implemented in home and at school.
  • Identify ways to grade up/down, adapt, modify and motivate children for success oriented activities.

Day 1 – SOTH DC Office

9:00 – 10:00 am: Intro to SPD, SI/Sensorimotor Therapy, Biomechanics, Keys for Therapy Success

10:00 – 11:00 am: Explaining the therapeutic benefits of Oral Motor/Tactile Treatment Interventions, Demonstrating activity, Participant performs intervention and problems solve to grade, modify and adapt for the best possible therapeutic outcomes.

11:00 – 11:15 am: BREAK

11:15 – 1:00 pm: Explaining the therapeutic benefits of Lycra Treatment Interventions, Demonstrating activity, Participant performs intervention and problems solve to grade, modify and adapt for the best possible therapeutic outcomes.

11:00 – 11:15 am: BREAK

11:15 – 1:00 pm: Explaining the therapeutic benefits of Grip Strength/Shoulder Stability,Dyad Games Tactile to Feet, Eye-hand Coordination, Balance/Body Awareness Interventions and problems solve to grade, modify and adapt for the best possible therapeutic outcomes.

1:00 – 2:00 pm: LUNCH

2:00 – 3:45 pm: Explaining the therapeutic benefits of Tactile to Feet, Eye-hand Coordination, Balance/Body Awareness Interventions, Demonstrating activity, Participant performs intervention and problems solve to grade, modify and adapt for the best possible therapeutic outcomes.

About the instructor

Alex Lopiccolo a/k/a Mr. Alex is an experienced Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant, Certified Personal Trainer and Nutrition Consultant. Alex is well known as The King of Swings. When he is not treating as a full time Sensory Integration Therapy practitioner he travels around the world sharing his knowledge of sensorimotor therapy with OT’s and students at pediatric clinics and universities. Alex also works with the leading Sensory Therapy company, Southpaw Enterprises on different swing inventions. He especially enjoys designing and installing home sensory gyms to help his young clients at home.

Growing up in Michigan, Alex struggled with Sensory Processing Disorder himself. The strategies that he developed, along with a strong calling to help others, inspired the fun and therapeutic approach he has been using with his clients for over eight years.
Alex, his wife, and two children live in Gig Harbor, after relocating from Edmonds and Denver. His favorite activities are spending time with his family, disc golf, canicross with his dog Optimus Prime, running barefoot, inventing sensory therapy equipment, and exploring the Pacific Northwest.

To get to our DC office:

It is about a 30 minute ride on the Metro Blue Line towards Largo Town Center, starting at Crystal City Station and ending at Potomac Avenue Station. Once you exit the Potomac Ave Station, it is >5 min. walk up Pennsylvania Ave to our office located at 1301 Pennsylvania Ave SE.

To get to our Arlington office:

Take Metro Blue Line towards Largo Town Center, starting at Crystal City Station and ending at Pentagon City Station. Once you exit the station, find Bus Bay B and take Bus 16H West to Skyline City for about 10 minutes. Exit at the Columbia Pike @ Courthouse Rd stop. Walk about two minutes to the Siena Park building at 2301 Columbia Pike. We are located on the M level. The elevator is accessible in the lobby just thru the door past XSport Fitness.
